Supplies Needed
- Disposable gloves
- Toilet or commode
- Toilet paper or wipes
- Small container of water or spray bottle (optional)
- Odor-control spray (optional)
- Hand sanitizer or soap and water
Steps to Empty a Colostomy Bag
- Wash your hands: Use soap and water or hand sanitizer before beginning.
- Put on disposable gloves: Wear gloves to protect yourself and ensure hygiene.
- Sit or stand comfortably: Patient may sit on the toilet, or a container may be used if in bed.
- Unclip or open the bag: Open the tail end (usually with Velcro or a clip).
- Drain into the toilet: Slowly squeeze or roll the bag from top to bottom to empty it completely.
- Clean the tail end: Use wipes or toilet paper to clean the inside and outside of the opening.
- Close and secure: Refasten the Velcro or clip securely.
- Dispose of wipes and gloves: Throw used materials into a plastic bag or trash can.
- Wash hands again: Clean your hands thoroughly after finishing.
Additional Tips
- Empty the bag when it is one-third to one-half full to avoid leaks or ballooning.
- Support the patient respectfully, maintaining privacy and dignity at all times.
- Watch for unusual changes in color, consistency, or odor, and report them to a nurse.
