Effectiveness of a Training Programme on Emotional Intelligence Among Final Year B.Sc Nursing Students

Introduction

Emotional intelligence (EI) is an essential skill for nursing professionals, enabling them to recognize, understand, and manage their own emotions while responding effectively to the emotions of patients and colleagues. Strong emotional intelligence improves communication, empathy, decision-making, stress management, and overall quality of patient care. As nursing students prepare to enter professional practice, developing emotional intelligence becomes increasingly important for delivering compassionate and holistic healthcare.

About the Study

This research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured Emotional Intelligence Training Programme among final-year B.Sc Nursing students at a selected nursing college in Thanjavur. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest research design was adopted involving 50 final-year B.Sc Nursing students selected through purposive sampling. Emotional intelligence was assessed using the Schutte Self Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT) before and after a seven-day training programme.

Training Programme

The educational programme focused on developing:

  • Self-confidence
  • Emotional self-management
  • Understanding others
  • Empathy
  • Communication skills
  • Relationship management
  • Recognition of personal strengths and weaknesses
  • Inspirational learning activities and interactive sessions

The intervention was conducted over seven days, followed by post-intervention evaluation.

Key Findings

The study demonstrated a significant improvement in emotional intelligence among the participating nursing students after completion of the training programme. The findings indicate that structured emotional intelligence education helps students improve emotional awareness, interpersonal relationships, communication skills, and professional confidence. The results support the integration of emotional intelligence training into undergraduate nursing education to prepare future nurses for emotionally demanding clinical environments.

Conclusion

Emotional intelligence is a vital component of professional nursing practice. Structured training programmes can effectively enhance the emotional competence of nursing students, enabling them to deliver patient-centered care, cope with workplace stress, communicate effectively, and build strong therapeutic relationships. Incorporating emotional intelligence education into nursing curricula can contribute to producing compassionate, resilient, and competent healthcare professionals.
